The Permanent Account Number (PAN) card, issued by the Income tax Department, is one of the most important documents nowadays. The card was issued in order to prevent tax evasion by individuals and entities as it links all financial transactions made by a particular individual or entity.

Step 1: Go to the official website of NSDL i.e. www.onlineservices.nsdl.com.

Step 2: A page will open, under Application Type select New Pan- Indian Citizen (Form 49A). If you are a foreign national then select New PAN -Foreign Citizen(49AA)

Step 3: Select the category of PAN card you need.

Step 4: Fill in your personal details like name, date of birth, mobile number, etc

Step 5: Enter the captcha code and click submit

Step 6: After clicking the submit button, a token number will be generated. You will be required to click on the link to continue with your PAN application

Step 7: A new page will appear and it will show you three options: 1. Submit digitally through e-KYC and e- Sign (paperless) 2. Submit scanned image through e-Sign 3. Forward application documents physically.

Step 8: The most common and preferred is scanned image through e-sign.

Step 9: After selecting the option, enter your details such as Adhaar Card number, parents name, etc. click next.

Step 10: This step requires you to fill in your name, date of birth, address etc. After filling all the details click Next.

Step 11: In the next step, you will be required to enter your area code, AO (assessing officer) type, range code, and AO number. Click next.

Step 12: Select the documents you have submitted as proof of age and residence from the drop-down menu, fill in the required detail and then click submit.

Step 13: Once your documents are uploaded you will be directed to the payment page, you can choose one of the many online payment methods. The fee for PAN card application if Rs. 115.90 excluding additional bank charges, if any. If you have chosen to send the physical documents instead of opting for e-KYC or e-Sign, then you will have to make a payment of Rs. 110.

Step 14: Once you have made the payment, you will be required to go through the Aadhaar authentication process, or submit documents via e-sign or to physically send the documents to NSDL. You will also receive an email acknowledgment from NSDL about your application.

Step 15: Your Pan Card will be couriered to you once the application has been processed. Keep the acknowledgment number with you.

Here are the steps to follow to make changes to your PAN card:

 

Step 1: Visit NSDL or the UTIITSL portal

Step 2: Fill in the PAN Change Request Form online.

Step 3: Mention your PAN number correctly since an incorrect number will delay your change request.

Step 4: Make sure you select the checkbox next to the parameters that you wish to change.

For Example: If you are changing how your name is spelt, enter the correct spelling, and select the checkbox on the left margin.

Note: If you do not select the checkbox, the change will not be made.

Check all your details and submit the form.

Step 5: Once your changes have been confirmed, a 15-digit acknowledgement number will be displayed. Keep this number in handy since you will require it for further communication or to track your application status.

If you are submitting the document on the UTIITSL website, you will have to send the required documents to any one of the UTIITSL offices in Mumbai, Kolkata, New Delhi, or Chennai.

Keep in Mind

While submitting the form for any corrections to be made on your PAN card, do note the following:

  • Individuals should not use abbreviations in their first and last names.
  • Non-individuals (companies and partnerships), should write their full name as it is.
    • For example, if your company’s name is ‘XYZ Computer Corporation Private Limited’, in the space that says last name/surname, you will fill ‘XYZ Computer Corporation Private Limited’.
    • If there is no place in the first row, you can continue the name of the corporation in the second row.
    • Ensure that there are no abbreviations in the company’s name.
  • For individuals, if your PAN card has an incorrect or unclear photograph or signature, you will also have to submit your original PAN card when you submit the acknowledgement.

When you have lost PAN card or damaged your existing PAN card, you should not apply for a new PAN card. Out of ignorance people tend to apply for new PAN card instead of applying for duplicate PAN card. Obtaining or possessing more than one Permanent Account Number (PAN) is against the law.
